Rang Barse…

Holi is undoubtedly one of the widely celebrated, vibrant and popular festivals of India. It is played with great fervour and joy in almost every Indian home. Today even foreigners who come to India or are acquainted with the Indian culture recognize the beauty and true spirit of the ‘Festival of Colors.’ The festival has, in recent times, spread to parts of Europe and North America as a spring celebration of love, frolic and colours. Holi celebrations start on the night before Holi with a bonfire known as ‘Holika’, around which people sing and dance. On the day of Holi, people smear colors or gulal on each other in groups or individually. There are sprinklers for splashing liquid or water-based colors, popularly called a pichkari. There are face paints, glitters, invisible colors, herbal colors and what not!

People host Holi parties at their own homes, clubs and various open spaces where colored water and gulal flows endlessly. When it comes to celebrating Holi, people just forget all restrictions and enjoy to the fullest! It is real fun to watch people splash colors at each other and let hair down, carefree and full of spirit. Different Holi special delicacies are available on this occasion. Many even have bhaang or thandai, escalating the level of enthusiasm.

So just soak in the excitement of this beautiful festival and be colorful! HAPPY HOLI!!!

Each Day Springs a Surprise!

Wake up each day with a feeling that something wonderful is about to happen.” Yes, I completely believe in this saying. Life is so full of beauties, mysteries and unknown surprises. Each day is beautiful, promising and holds multiple opportunities. So why waste time thinking what’s gone and regret the past? Instead have faith in yourself, your abilities and the supreme Almighty. Believe that each day can make you a better human being and present amazing life-changing possibilities. Keep a positive mind and be an optimist. Change how you perceive the world and it will change everything around you. Remember, a happy mind attracts happiness and limitless opportunities. So get going, feel good and enjoy life!

Where Are We Heading???

India shining…well really! Women being raped, beaten, abused, dowry deaths, children abuse, female foeticide, poverty, starvation, homelessness and what not! Where are we actually heading? Are we marching forward or taking gradual steps back to the primitive ages? An episode aired yesterday on a popular Hindi TV channel countering social issues came as a rude shock. A matter which should have been sorted out within four walls of home turned out to be a brawl and a complete farce in full public view. Was the drama needed? On another recently started show hosted by Aamir Khan, various social causes are being addressed. People come and go. But the question is…what is the significance and utility of such programs? Are we actually taking cue from such public awareness campaigns or just sitting back and enjoying?

India is being touted as one of the developing nations of the modern world. In spite of becoming an independent
country, a republic, more than a half century ago, India is still submerged in darkness. Corruption and vices are popping their heads everywhere. A large section of poor children in India do not go to school. Even if they go, they become drop outs and fail to complete education. To find an answer, we have to go to the core of the matter which have their roots in the colonial past while some are related to demographic changes, socio-political conditions and cultural changes. We are living in difficult times. A popular show aired on a Hindi entertainment channel every Friday and Saturday night showcases the recent spurt of crimes in metros and suburbs. Yet another attempt to educate people and increase mass awareness! There are similar shows on many other channels highlighting social issues and crimes. But the end result is same – complete apathy and lack of consciousness. People are laid back, selfish and inhuman. We do not want to overcome the barriers. Instead, we love to play the silent observer. How many of us care to know what is happening to our next door neighbor? A woman battered, molested, set ablaze, a child subject to paedophilia or elderly parents driven out of the house. We don’t bother! Where are we? Today we have multiple possessions but our values are diminished. It’s time we rethink. India is really ‘shining’!!

Doing absolutely NOTHING…

That’s right! To be precise…I’m doing nothing…nothing that excites me…nothing that is worthwhile! It’s just frustrating! Work has taken a backseat due to certain changes in department and so…the lull after the storm…err…the hectic work for the last few months!

Well…in a way, this is a welcome break! I’m enjoying the chilly winters and lazying around (in office) watching TV, playing games, blogging and exploring the web for what not! Good learning, must say!

Missing out on all the winter fun…no movies, shopping, eating out and roaming around…all that I badly wanna do. Coming to office every day and doing nothing…’tis boring like hell! The morning traffic, the continuous honking of cars and buses irritates me like anything…wish I could just spend a few days in solitude…but guess that’s an utopia at the moment 🙂

So, I’d just look up to 2012 with all new hope and enthusiasm…hope it rings in happiness, love, prosperity, gains and good luck!

A beautiful poem “Remember” by Christina Rossetti on the eve of St. Valentines Day!

Remember me when I am gone away,
Gone far away into the silent land;
When you can no more hold me by the hand,
Nor I half turn to go yet turning stay.
Remember me when no more day by day
You tell me of our future that you plann’d:
Only remember me; you understand
It will be late to counsel then or pray.
Yet if you should forget me for a while
And afterwards remember, do not grieve:
For if the darkness and corruption leave
A vestige of the thoughts that once I had,
Better by far you should forget and smile
Than that you should remember and be sad.

Winter…Season of Mists and Mellow Fruitfulness

I always associate winter with Keats’ poetry.  It’s a beautiful season and time of the year, complete with its colors, music, aroma and beautiful warm sunshine. The weather is great and everything just seems lively and romantic! I love to indulge in all those lip smacking foods and festivities. And how can I dismiss the prolonged and undisturbed sleep under warm and fluffy blankets? That’s simply incomparable!

There’s Christmas, New Year’s Eve, New Year and a whole lot of ongoing winter celebrations. Winter is warm, sensuous and redolent with the sweet smell of flowers and all other good things that this season has to offer. Winter always brings back happy memories from childhood…the way we used to yearn for cakes, pastries and wait eagerly for school Yuletide parties and celebrations. That was awesome! As a child, the aroma of freshly baked cakes was irresistible! It still is 🙂 I still love to explore all the cake and pastry shops in town in search of that gorgeous piece of cake. I try to prepare cakes in my own special way. So winter for me is indeed special! Hence I welcome the “Season of Mists and Mellow Fruitfulness” with all enthusiasm and wish that it stays for quite some time!
